Corgi Chihuahua mix is a mixed breed dog that comes from the breeding of a Chihuahua and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. When talking about a mixed breed dog it is very important to take a look at the two parents.

Chihuahua is a toy dog breed that is known for its fierceness. These little dogs are loud barkers and not the most social dogs out there. Chihuahuas select a favourite human and like to stick to only that human. They don’t necessarily like to socialize, but this can be altered if they are trained and introduced to other dogs and humans from early on in their lives.

Corgis were originally bred as hunting dogs. Corgis, unlike Chihuahuas, are fun-loving, outgoing and people pleasers. However, Corgis also make great watchdogs.

These little dogs are very energetic and love to go out. They also need a fair amount of exercise to stay healthy. Corgis are a highly intelligent breed and react excellently to training.

The appearance of a Corgi Chihuahua mix

The body of a Chigi or a Corgi Chihuahua Mix usually has a longer Corgi like appearance and round Chihuahua like eyes. However, your puppy can look absolutely different, depending on which parent’s gene it displays.

Most mixed breeds dogs can be hard to predict, in terms of appearance as well as personality as it highly depends on the parents and their genes. But a Chigi won’t grow much in size as one parent is a toy dog and the other is a small dog. So a Chigi usually is never bigger than a full-grown healthy Corgi.

The ears of your dog will most likely be stiff and bat-like, as both the parents have stiff ears. Depending on the parent, your Chigi can have long, medium or short hair. It might also have a flat coat. When it comes to colours, these little dogs can be any of the following colours or colour combinations.

  • Black
  • Golden
  • Red
  • Silver
  • White
  • Blue
  • Brown
  • Black and white
  • Light brown
  • Golden
  • Golden and white
  • Tan and white
  • Black and tan

You can expect your Chigi to be 12 inches in height and 30 pounds in weight once it grows to its full length. Keep in mind that this mix sheds a lot.

The personality of a Chigi

Even though we can’t be exact about the personality of Chigis, because of them being a mixed breed, we can still try to predict some basic personality traits.

Chigis are mostly loving, adorable dogs that aren’t difficult to train. They can be stubborn at times, owing to their Chihuahua parent. Often these dogs are highly intelligent and show the herding instincts of a Corgi.

If you have small kids, you have to instruct them to be gentle with your dog, as kids might take small dogs for being harmless. Another thing you should keep in mind is if your Chigi is more like its Chihuahua parent it might be a little fierce. So leaving them alone with kids is a bad idea. However, if your Chigi is more like its Corgi parent this will not be an issue at all.

Training a Chigi again depends on which parent it has taken from the most. If your dog is more of a Corgi, it will be super intelligent and very easy to train. But if it shows more of Chihuahua characteristics you might have to work harder. Chihuahuas aren’t exactly the smartest dogs out there and are also famous for their stubbornness.

Taking care of a Chigi

If we talk about the health of your Corgi Chihuahua Mix, it shouldn’t really be a problem. Mixed bred dogs are generally healthier than their purebred counterparts. Added to that a Chigi is a small breed and small dogs are generally free of health complications.

Remember though that if the parent dog has any genetic health condition, then it might get passed on to the offsprings. To ensure that this is;t the case, ask your breeder to provide you with the papers of the parent dogs so that you can check for any underlying health conditions. Chigis can be expected to live for 12 to 20 years.

Your Chigi’s dietary needs will change from puppyhood to adulthood. As a puppy, you need to give your dog four little meals a day and later it can be changed to two big meals a day. Chigis don’t need a lot of food as they are a small dog breed. But don’t change their food brands often and make sure that you don’t overfeed them as they are prone to gaining weight.

Since Chigis shed a lot, they may be a little on the high maintenance side. Apart from that, you need to take regular care of your dog, like bathing it regularly, brushing its coat, cutting its nail and making sure that the fur doesn’t have any lice. If your Chigi has longer hair, you might need to give its grooming a little more attention.

Chigis also have a high exercising need as both the parents are quite active breeds. They need exercise to stay healthy. If your Chigi is more towards a Corgi, then exercise is an absolute must as Corgis tend to gain weight.

Is Chigi the right pet for you?

  1. If you live in a small house, Chigis might be perfect for you as they aren’t very big.
  2. But if you live in an apartment they might be a problem because of their loud bark.
  3. If you have kids, Chigis might not be great because neither of the parents is too gentle. Moreover, your child might unintentionally hurt your Chigi as Chigis are small dogs and look completely harmless.
  4. If you can’t take your dog out on walks or make it do some rigirous exercise at least for 30 minutes each day, Chigis aren’t for you.
  5. Chigis shed a lot. So if you have allergies this Corgi Chihuahua mix might not be the perfect dog for you.
