If you are someone who loves toy dogs, this little dog will surely melt your heart. ShiChi or the Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix is an offspring of the two most adorable toy dogs, Shih Tzu and Chihuahua.

The ShiChi, because of being a mixed breed dog isn’t recognized by the American Kennel Club. But these adorable dogs have been recognized by other canine clubs like the American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Breed Registry, Dog Registry of America, Designer Dog Kennel Club, and the International Designer Canine Registry

To understand your ShiChi better, you have to know about the parent dogs. So let’s look at the Shih Tzu and Chihuahua individually first before looking at the ShiChi.

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu, the Chinese dog breed is apparently one of the most photographed dog breeds in the world. They are hairy, cute, and are the perfect toy dog. The origin of Shih Tzus can be traced back to ancient Chinese times.

These cute dogs, however, were not bred for the purpose of being toy dogs. They were initially bred to be watchdogs because of their very loud barks. Shih Tzus were mostly bred and kept in palaces and were seen as a luxury.

Shih Tzus are fun-loving, outgoing, brave, and fierce dogs. They love making friends, be it with other dogs or with humans.

Chihuahuas are tiny dogs but their origin isn’t very clear. Some sources claim this small dog first originated in China and was later brought to the US.

Chihuahuas are very fierce and loyal dogs, even though they look tiny. Chihuahuas are fearless and never take their smallness into account before getting into a confrontation with a big dog. But their fierceness doesn’t make them a bad pet

They can be great around family and friends if you train them well. Chihuahuas like poodles are one-person dogs. Meaning, they will want love and affection from only one person and will generally stay away from other people.

Chihuahuas can be the perfect watchdog because of their fierceness.

How does a ShiChi look?

Just like every mixed breed dog, it isn’t easy to predict the exact appearance of the dog. This is because the offspring takes genes from both the parents, and you never know which breed’s genes will show up as dominant. To get the best idea about what your pup will look like, you can ask the breeder for the parents’ papers and analyze their characteristics.

One assured thing is the size. Your ShiChi won’t grow beyond 25 centimetres in size or weigh between 2 to 7 kilos. There is no way your ShiChi will be a big dog, as both the parents are toy breeds. However, ShiChi’s coat could have short, medium, or long hair, depending on the parents.

The ShiChi pup can be of a single colour or a mix of colours. Some of the common colour combinations seen in the Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix are

  • Black and white
  • Tan and white
  • Black, tan and white
  • Red and white

The temperament of a ShiChi

Again, like the appearance of a mixed breed dog, it is also difficult to predict the personality of the dog. They can either be more like a Shih Tzu, more like a Chihuahua or a perfect mix of both. There is no way by which you can be sure about the temperament of your ShiChi.

If the ShiChi takes more from its Shih Tzu parent, it will be fun-loving, friendly, loud and loyal. But if your dog takes from the Chihuahua parent, then they might be fierce, not so friendly and a not so social dog. But if your pup takes from both its parents equally you will get a fun-loving, energetic and protective pup.

However, keep in mind that you can always train your dog to be well behaved. If you socialize them early on in their lives, they will be great with people and other dogs. So a dog’s temperament isn’t something very rigid. You can easily alter this with love and training.

The training process of a ShiChi might be a little difficult, as these tiny dogs can be stubborn at times. You will need to be patient with them.

Where to find a ShiChi and how much do they cost?

The Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix isn’t a rare breed. So you shouldn’t really face any problems in finding a breeder with a ShiChi. If you know any breeder who breeds toy dogs, it is highly likely that they will have a ShiChi too.

ShiChi puppies can cost anywhere between $200 to $1,000. These dogs are on the cheaper end of the price range. But be sure to find an ethical breeder who breeds the dogs well. If you get a badly bred dog, there might be many health complications in your dog later on.

ShiChis aren’t really high-maintenance dogs and you would not need to spend a lot of money on them. Professionally grooming your ShiChi once in a couple of months should be enough. Apart from that, you have to bathe them and keep them clean at home. If your ShiChi has longer hair, the grooming process might take longer.

Is the ShiChi the right dog for you?

If you are thinking of getting yourself a Shih Tzu Chihuahua mix, but questioning whether it is the right dog for you, here are a few things that you can consider before making a decision.

  1. ShiChis are toy dogs and don’t need a lot of space. So if you have little space, they might be the correct breed for you.
  2. These dogs can be a little fierce, so if you have kids in the house, keep that in mind.
  3. On the other hand, kids might harm these dogs by mistake, given their small size.
  4. They aren’t high maintenance
  5. Smaller dogs like the ShiChi have very few health complications
  6. ShiChis are very active so make sure they get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day
